This week alone, OpenAI paused its Stargate UK data center citing "high energy costs and regulatory challenges," while Amazon's Leo satellite internet—originally promised years ago—now targets mid-2026 for launch. These aren't isolated hiccups. They're symptoms of an industry that's better at promising computational power than delivering it.

The Stargate UK pause is particularly revealing. This wasn't some speculative moonshot—it was a partnership with NVIDIA explicitly designed to provide the UK with sovereign AI computing capabilities. The fact that OpenAI is hitting pause suggests the economics of AI infrastructure are considerably worse than the glossy announcements implied. "High energy costs" is corporate speak for "the math doesn't work," and when you're OpenAI—a company that just launched a $100/month subscription tier—money shouldn't be the issue.

Amazon's satellite internet delay follows a similar pattern. Leo (formerly Project Kuiper) has been in development for years, with Amazon touting it as a direct competitor to Starlink. Yet here we are in early 2026, still waiting. CEO Andy Jassy's shareholder letter frames it as imminent, but imminent has a funny way of stretching when you're dealing with the physical realities of launching thousands of satellites and building ground infrastructure.

What connects these stories isn't just delays—it's the collision between AI's software-speed culture and infrastructure's hardware reality. You can iterate on a language model weekly. You can't iterate on a data center or satellite constellation the same way. Energy grids don't scale at the pace of venture capital expectations. Regulatory approvals don't move at startup velocity.

The industry has spent years selling a narrative of infinite scalability: more compute, more data, more capability, forever. But Stargate UK's pause exposes the lie. There are hard limits—energy, regulation, physics—and they're catching up faster than anyone wants to admit. When even deep-pocketed players like OpenAI and Amazon are hitting deployment walls, it raises questions about the dozens of smaller AI infrastructure promises floating around.

This matters because the entire AI value proposition depends on reliable, scalable infrastructure. Companies are building products assuming cloud compute will be abundant and affordable.
