AI² Robotics' massive $735 million funding round at a $3 billion valuation represents more than just another humanoid robotics startup hitting the fundraising jackpot. It represents a fundamental bet against the industry's decade-long obsession with making robots walk like humans.

The Shenzhen-based company isn't building another Atlas competitor. Instead, they're developing wheeled humanoids with five-fingered hands, paired with their proprietary Vision-Language-Action model called Alpha Brain. It's a pragmatic middle ground that acknowledges a simple truth the industry has been slow to accept: manipulation matters more than mobility in most industrial settings.

Consider what's actually needed in a logistics warehouse or manufacturing facility. You need robots that can grasp irregular objects, operate human-designed tools, and navigate structured environments with known layouts. You don't need them to climb stairs, traverse rocky terrain, or recover from being pushed by engineers with hockey sticks—all impressive demonstrations that have dominated humanoid robotics videos for years but remain largely irrelevant to the environments where robots will actually work.

The timing of this investment is particularly telling. While companies like Boston Dynamics continue refining bipedal locomotion and Figure works on walking humanoids for BMW's factories, AI² is essentially arguing that wheels solve 90% of industrial mobility challenges at 10% of the complexity. They're not wrong. Warehouses have smooth floors. Factory floors are designed for forklifts. The infrastructure is already optimized for wheeled vehicles.

What makes this approach compelling isn't just the mechanical simplification—it's the computational resources freed up when you're not constantly solving balance equations. Those cycles can be redirected toward the genuinely hard problem: dexterous manipulation and understanding complex task instructions through their VLA model. This is where the real bottleneck exists in deploying general-purpose robots.
